G. ELLIS ZIEL, MD

Ellis Ziel, MD is a board certified radiation oncologist and is trained to treat all types of cancer.  Prior to arriving in Georgia, Dr. Ziel practiced for over 5 years at the North Star Lodge Cancer Center in the state of Washington where he served on the Cancer Committee as Vice-chair and Cancer Liaison Physician.  He has extensive experience in complex cancer treatment procedures, including stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), high-dose rate brachytherapy (HDR), and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). 

Education

Dr. Ziel completed his undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University with a major Neuroscience and minor in Philosophy.  He received his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and went on to complete his internship in internal medicine at the University of California, Irvine and residency training in Radiation Oncology at Rush-Presbyterian Medical Center in Chicago.  He then completed an additional year-long specialty fellowship in HDR brachytherapy for prostate, gynecologic, head & neck, and skin cancers at the University of California, Los Angeles.   

Awards

Dr. Ziel graduated Cum Laude from Vanderbilt University.  He was awarded the W. Hudson Turner Scholarship to attend medical school at UAB.  While at UAB he received the J. Galbraith Memorial Award for Excellence in Human Anatomy, The Larry Mayes Memorial Scholarship to fund medical mission work in Oaxaca, Mexico, and was elected to the Pathology Honor Society of the Association of Pathology Chairs.  Other awards include 3rd place winner in Radiation Physics at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology and an NIH Young Investigator Travel Award for the Child Neurology Society.

Research

Dr. Ziel has written and co-authored multiple publications and abstracts as well as given oral presentation for national meetings.  He has actively recruited patients to Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) trials and national cooperative group trials in the community cancer care setting. 

Additional Biography

In his free time, Dr. Ziel enjoys outdoor activities and water sports of all types.  He stays busy with his two young children and trying to expose them to as many activities as possible.  On weekends, when he is not on-call, he likes to work with various musicians in need of a rhythm guitarist or back-up vocals.
